Magpie Bookshop is stationed along Main Street in Catskill, NY - a place with literal cat sculptures along the street (and I assume throughout the town.) The shop was a reminder of the familiar smell and tone that a shop could have, without feeling overbearing with additional items that limit the space from feeling literary focused. It truly felt like sitting down in your favorite reading chair with a cup of tea on a rainy day. The comfort and familiarity that the space provided was incredibly calming. It was great chatting with the owner, as she shared about numerous other bookshops to visit in the area through - what felt like - a treasure map (which was a beautifully crafted map.)

Favorite Aspect:

The upstairs felt like perusing the upstairs of a close friend’s home - a friend who had a clear obsession and passion for books. Everything was orderly, but not overly so, allowing patrons to go on a mini quest for a fun, unique read within the shelves and literal stacks. If you’ve felt removed from the atmosphere that a bookstore possesses or just need a place to breathe out to begin your 2025, Magpie Bookshop is a must visit!
